THE MYTH OF MATILDA FOR NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
The May 2025 issue of National Geographic Italia features an extensive reportage dedicated to the history of Matilda of Tuscany, a pivotal figure of the Middle Ages and the first Vice-Queen of Italy. This publication is the result of a close collaboration between photographer Erik Messori and videographer Davide Preti, with vital field coordination by Marcello Nizzoli and the expert supervision of Annecristie Badiu and the CAPTA collective. Special thanks go to the writer Paolo Ciampi for the texts and to National Geographic for believing in this project; their support was essential in sustaining the rigorous pace required for an investigation that spanned over 18 months. This incessant commitment led the team across four Italian regions and through countless cities, documenting the footprint of the “Gran Contessa” with the depth her legacy deserves. The production was both a logistical and creative challenge that demanded the total dedication of the entire team, aiming to move beyond simple historical chronicle. We focused on a specific narrative key: the myth of Matilda as a figure capable of travelling through time. The visual journey is constructed to lead the reader through a temporal relationship spanning a thousand years, juxtaposing the 11th-century reality with the contemporary landscape of modern-day Italy. From the rugged Apennine fortresses, such as the legendary Canossa Castle, to the Romanesque architecture and the living traditions of the region, we wanted to show how Matilda’s influence still breathes today within the stones and the soul of these lands. In this narrative, the contribution of researchers, historians, archaeologists, and museum curatorswas fundamental, as was the invaluable support of historical re-enactors and volunteers. The reportage thus documents the significant socio-cultural legacy that the Great Countess has left on her territory over a millennium, giving voice to the enthusiasm of all those who work daily to preserve and pass down local traditions and folklore from generation to generation. This special 16-page publication brings new light to the life and legacy of one of the most powerful women of the Middle Ages. Through powerful imagery and in-depth storytelling, the article explores Matilda’s role in shaping European history and her enduring cultural impact. This is a proud moment for our team and for all those passionate about historical storytelling, research, and visual documentation.
