MATILDA OF CANOSSA: THE EXHIBITION – DOMINA AETERNA
The project on Matilda of Canossa published in National Geographic has been transformed into an exhibition. “Domina Aeterna” arrives at the Palazzo Ducale in Revere, turning over 18 months of extensive research and documentation into a high-impact visual journey. This exhibition is the result of an ambitious undertaking that saw the team engaged in a rigorous reportage across four Italian regions, aiming to restore the figure of Matilda of Canossa—the first Vice-Queen of Italy—beyond the confines of academic myth. The result is an exhibition distinguished by a contemporary language and a meticulously curated display, capable of creating a dialogue between 11th-century heritage and the reality of today’s landscape. At the heart of the exhibition is the collaborative work that led to the feature in National Geographic, a partner that believed in the value of this project from the very beginning. The synergy between photographer Erik Messori, filmmaker Davide Preti, and writer Paolo Ciampi—with field coordination by Marcello Nizzoli and supervision by Annecristie Badiu and the CAPTA collective—has made it possible to bridge a millennium-wide gap. It brings to the public a socio-cultural legacy that still breathes today among ancient fortresses and living folk traditions.
The exhibition, held under the patronage of Regione Lombardia and the Province of Mantua, is set to welcome visitors to the prestigious Palazzo of the Museo del Po in Revere. Its realisation was made possible by the Municipality of Borgo Mantovano and their entire staff, through their constant logistical and institutional support. A special mention goes to the Director of the Museo del Po, Iames Tirabassi, and all the museum staff for the dedication shown during every phase of the installation. This exhibition is the result of a significant collective effort. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the sponsors who supported the initiative, our technical partners, and every individual whose hard work and dedication made this exhibition possible. Thanks to this collaboration between professionals, historians, and conservators, we can now offer the public a journey that invites them to rediscover a visionary leader through a lens capable of travelling through time.
Events and Conferences
Throughout its duration, the exhibition will be enriched by a busy calendar of peripheral events. A series of conferences, meet-the-author sessions, and historical in-depth talks curated by industry experts are planned, designed to make the exhibition a dynamic cultural hub and offer the public new perspectives on the “Great Countess”.
A “Pet-Welcome” Experience
A fundamental aspect of this exhibition is its total inclusivity: the show is officially pet-friendly. Those choosing to visit the galleries with their companion animals will benefit from a reduced ticket price and will receive exclusive gadgets for their four-legged friends. To ensure maximum comfort, a dedicated refreshment area has been set up, equipped with kits and facilities for your travelling companions.
