A year has passed, and I find myself returning to the landscapes of Northern Italy, lands still tormented by the memory and the legacy of COVID-19. In Bergamo, one of the cities most devastatingly impacted by the pandemic, the wounds remain raw and visible. Here, the virus was not a distant headline but a domestic invader; every family has been touched by its reach, and every household carries the heavy, enduring pain of losing a loved one. Documenting these stories requires a delicate touch. I move on tiptoe through these communities, seeking to capture the deeply personal narratives of those whose lives and affections were upended by a force that changed the world forever. It is a sombre task to record the resilience of a people still navigating the quiet aftermath of such immense collective grief.
