Erik Messori is an acclaimed Italian photojournalist celebrated for his in-depth coverage of armed conflicts, environmental crises, and social issues across Asia, Africa, and Europe. Over a career spanning more than 15 years, his work has graced the pages of prestigious publications such as National Geographic Italia, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Al Jazeera, BBC News, Stern, Le Monde and CNN, establishing him as a trusted voice in international reportage.

 

In addition to his photographic work, Messori co-founded the CAPTA collective, which is dedicated to both domestic and international storytelling. His professional journey includes formative experiences, such as attending seminars with renowned photographers Josef Koudelka, Martin Parr and Gianni Berengo Gardin, further honing his craft.

 

One of my most significant projects, “Independence on My Skin,” explores the deeply personal stories of individuals involved in the Irish independence struggle, using their tattoos as a visual narrative of their past and ongoing fight for identity and freedom. This project evolved into a book, “Independence on My Skin,” a powerful visual and narrative exploration of how history is permanently etched onto the bodies of those who have lived through Ireland’s turbulent past. The book has been widely acclaimed for its raw and intimate portrayal of personal and political struggle.

 

Messori’s contributions to photojournalism have not gone unnoticed. His work has earned him multiple international accolades, including the Environmental Vision Award at POYi in 2014. His photographs have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and universities around the globe, serving not only as art but as catalysts for discussions on human rights and social change.
